What is altitude training?

Altitude training is a method where the body is exposed to reduced oxygen availability to improve endurance and recovery.
At higher altitudes, the air contains less oxygen, forcing your body to adapt and use oxygen more efficiently.
This leads to improvements in oxygen transport, energy utilization, and fatigue resistance.

Two ways to apply altitude training:

  • At real altitude — For example, during a training camp in the mountains, where you stay and train in thin air for several days or weeks.
  • At home through simulation â€” Using a hypoxic tent or mask (e.g. IHHT), where the oxygen concentration in the air is artificially lowered. This allows you to build the same physiological stimulus without traveling.

Altitude training can be used for:

  • Performance improvement in endurance and interval sports
  • Faster recovery after intense efforts
  • Preparation for training camps or competitions at altitude
  • Metabolic optimization, for example in combination with nutrition and structured training
